Gardening Group Raffle

We are holding a fundraising raffle for our Gardening Group with some great prizes on offer including First prize of a beautiful stained glass panel of Berwick Pier taken from Spittal, (approx. 58cm x 32cm) donated by Linda Gibbons. Linda, who takes classes for stained glass in Burnmouth, has lived in Spittal over thirty years and appreciates what the group is trying to do for the village.

In fact, all the prizes have been handmade by people either living in Spittal or associated with the Gardening Group. Lynda Scott from Caroline House has donated a necklace and earrings made with cornelian stones collected from Spittal beach. This summer she is arranging beach combing trips, with jewelry making classes afterwards.
Jim Walker of Spittal has kindly donated a photograph of A H Robinson’s 1903 view of the Rowing Club and Old Bridge, taken from the west. The framing of the photograph has been donated by Mark Irving of The Irving Gallery in Bridge Street.

Irene Thomson, a new member of our group has made a quillow (a cushion with a quilt inside for chilly nights!) The cushion has an applique design of Spittal on the front with a colourful collage of sky, sea and sand made with beautiful material kindly donated by Bella B of Hide Hill, Berwick.
David Purvis from Condottieri in Greenwich Road, who also lives in Spittal, is donating a stained glass panel of a sea scape.

Other prizes include a watercolour of Spittal by Dorothy Slater and a small hand carved wooden spoon by Ruth Robertson, both members of our group.

Tickets are available from Spittal Food Store, gardening group members and on www.spittalisgreat.co.uk.

The Hut People , February 22nd

An infectious blend of world folk on accordion and percussion

BURC (formerly St Paul’s Church), Spittal.
22nd February 2020 at 7:30pm

One of the most entertaining and best loved acts on today’s UK folk scene are coming to Spittal and will be taking audiences on a musical voyage across the globe with their hugely entertaining blend of ‘world folk’.

Champions of the standing ovation, The Hut People are an instrumental duo of accordionist Sam Pirt and percussionist Gary Hammond. Together they perform a unique, high-octane, blend of global rhythms from Quebec to Spain, Scandinavia to Sussex, perfectly formed and embellished with the driving accordion and a mind-boggling array of exotic percussion.

Great music aside, a show from The Hut People is filled to the brim with spontaneity, often hilarious patter and a commitment to their getting-the-crowd-involved ethos. Audiences can expect feel-good dancing tunes, audience participation and lots of humour – with some Quebecois foot percussion & dancing thrown in for good measure.

Sam and Gary are well established musicians within the folk circuit with extensive musical backgrounds – having been part of and performed alongside legendary acts such as The Beautiful South, Nina Simone, The Dubliners & Sharon Shannon, 422, Kathryn Tickell and Jez Lowe as well as many other collaborations within the world, jazz and pop genres.

Spittal Improvement Trust are bringing the duo to Spittal in partnership with the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme. The duo has previously toured with Highlights and were in Spittal back in 2011, they are now making a welcomed return to win new fans with their quirky celebration of our rich musical heritage.

“a bewildering array of percussion and accordion-fired compositions….truly infectious!” R2

‘This is a brilliantly unique sound – a duo of piano accordion and percussion definitely unbounded by British traditions as they stride into world music’ The Scotsman
